From Waste to Award Finalist: Little Bread Winner Named a Clean + Conscious Awards Finalist
Well, this is a pretty special one.
Our Solid Surface Board and Saw Combo has officially been named a finalist in the Best Handmade / Artisan Product category of the 2026 Clean + Conscious Awards.
And considering this product starts its life as someone else’s waste, we think that’s pretty bloody brilliant.
It Started With Material Destined for Landfill
One of the things that has always bothered me is seeing perfectly good material being thrown away simply because it is left over from another manufacturing process.
Solid surface is an incredible material.
It is durable, non porous, hygienic, easy to clean and resistant to stains and moisture.
But when benchtops and other products are manufactured, there can be perfectly usable pieces left over.
Pieces that are too small for the original job, but far too beautiful and useful to become waste.
I looked at those offcuts and thought...
Surely we can do something better with that.
So we did.
Turning Waste Into Something Wonderful
Instead of those solid surface offcuts heading towards landfill, we reclaim them and transform them into functional kitchen products.
Bread boards.
Bread saws.
And our Solid Surface Board and Saw Combo, which is now officially an award finalist.
There is something I absolutely love about that.
A piece of material that could have been considered waste gets picked up, worked on, shaped, finished and turned into something beautiful enough to sit proudly in someone's kitchen.
And because we work with reclaimed material, every piece can be a little different.
Different colours.
Different patterns.
Different stories.
That is part of the beauty of it.
More Than 22 Tonnes and Counting
To date, Little Bread Winner has helped save more than 22 tonnes of material from landfill.
Twenty two tonnes.
I still have moments where I look at that number and think...
How did we do that?
Little Bread Winner started because I couldn't cut a decent slice of sourdough.
Seriously.
I just wanted thin toast instead of giant sourdough doorstops.
But somewhere along the way, this little bread obsessed business became about something much bigger.
It became about asking what else we could do differently.
What materials could we save?
What could we make locally?
What could we turn into something useful instead of throwing away?
Sustainability Should Actually Mean Something
Sustainability has become one of those words you see everywhere.
For me, it needs to mean more than putting a green leaf on some packaging and calling it eco friendly.
It is about making different decisions.
Using materials that already exist.
Working with local businesses.
Making products here in Brisbane.
Designing things people will actually want to keep.
And looking at something considered waste and asking whether it really needs to be waste at all.
Sometimes the most sustainable material is the one that has already been made.
It just needs someone to see its potential.
Handmade in Brisbane
Every reclaimed solid surface product we make requires hands on work.
We are taking material that was never originally created to become a bread board or bread saw and giving it an entirely new purpose.
That takes time.
It takes problem solving.
And occasionally it takes looking at a strange shaped offcut and wondering what on earth I'm going to turn it into.
But that is also what makes this range so special.
It isn't mass produced.
It isn't another container of identical kitchen products arriving from overseas.
It is reclaimed material being transformed right here in Brisbane into something designed to be used and loved for years.
And Now It Is an Award Finalist
Having our Solid Surface Board and Saw Combo recognised in the Best Handmade / Artisan Product category means a lot.
Because this product represents so many of the things I want Little Bread Winner to stand for.
Australian made.
Handcrafted.
Practical.
Beautiful.
Sustainable.
And just a little bit clever.
It proves that waste doesn't have to look like waste.
In fact, sometimes it can become something pretty bloody beautiful.
From Sourdough to Sustainability
If you had told me when I started Little Bread Winner that my inability to cut sourdough would eventually lead to reclaiming tonnes of manufacturing material and becoming a Clean + Conscious Awards finalist, I probably would have laughed at you.
Yet here we are.
More than 22 tonnes diverted from landfill.
Products being handcrafted in Brisbane.
Beautiful materials being given another chance.
And now our Solid Surface Board and Saw Combo is a 2026 Clean + Conscious Awards finalist.
Not bad for a business that started because one woman couldn't cut her toast properly.
